Positive image more reflective of community: Spratt

South Belfast DUP MLA Jimmy Spratt has welcomed an announcement by the Arts Council for Northern Ireland of a significant programme in the Greater Village area of South Belfast. As part of the ‘Re-Imaging Communities’ Programme, positive images will replace wall murals with connotations of our troubled past.

Welcoming the announcement, Mr Spratt said:

‘Today’s announcement from the Arts Council is to be welcomed wholeheartedly. Rather than murals depicting a negative message, we have a commitment to bring about positive images, reflective of the ethos of the wider greater Village community.

As Northern Ireland moves forward in a positive manner, it is clear that any glorification of terrorism is not part of that, whether it is a mural or some other shrine. In the Village, we have a community who have made a decision to move on positively. My constituents in the area are good people who deserve to have a positive image of their area. ‘
